A lesson to learn from Delhi By:Dhiraj Debbarma, Category: General, Posted on:2009-11-08 23:38:05
One can feel a sense of alienation and second citizen treatment once you step out side the house in Delhi today. There is a tendency of you not being counted as an Indian citizens or a perception of being known as northeastern People / Nepali/ Chinki etc and treated as a different community from rest of India. One thing is for sure, whatever way you try to convince them, us as an Indian, in many occasions you failed cause you are not counted among one of their own.
This was aptly said in many discussions and can be found in many social forum and community debates. And I fully agreed with the views and opinion that were discussed, taking in to consideration the recent spate of incidents involving people from North-East region right from molestation to sexual harassment, racial discrimination, and shameful rape and murder cases.
The most recent case was the gruesome Rape and murder of a teenage Naga girl at Munirka, South Delhi committed during broad daylight by one PhD student of IIT Delhi from Bihar, and a serious molestation case carried out by a mob of School going kids on a 21 year old Arunachali girl in the vicinity of Jamia milia islamia University, when she was on her way to attend her routine class. Another shocking incident was, about three brother and a sister hailing from the state of Nagaland who were humiliated, abused and then severely beaten up by a group of drunken local residents in Safdarjung enclave on 11th of October evening, regarding a small issue of parking a car, and the car tyres were deflated. When the passerby and some of the NE community living in the locality came forward to protest and help the wounded. Neither, they were spared. But what surprised most is the manner in which the Delhi police officials handled the investigation. Instead of helping the wounded and arresting the main culprits, the three wounded Nagas were arrested and took them to the police station. Later, the NE community of that area came out to protest in a peaceful manner, demanding justice. But they were manhandled and severely lathi charge by the police. This case indicates a sheer case of gross Human Rights violations. In spite of this routine discrimination and harassment carried out against the community coming from north-east India. Especially the youths and the so called educated-stylish-broad minded tiprasa/tiprajwks/Sajwks, they don't even seem to learn a lesson from such horrifying incidents. They never seem to think twice or deeply interrogate themselves what will be the consequences before getting engaged, committing the people from outside the society.
If you go in a detail wise as well, many of our people are regretting from their immature decision that they had taken out of haste and sheer excitement and without any logical thinking and now being severely tortured in other society. It is very sad and surprising that today many of our talented tiprajwks are in a hue and cry position. The reasons is simple they lack to aspire themselves. We all have a high respect for women, especially in the Tripuri culture, as some of the stories involving our tripuri women are still immortal and fresh in our minds. We cannot forget at all, the selfless contributions made by our woman Freedom fighters KUMARI, MADHUTI, RUPASHRI at Khowai, decades back and I believe they are the torch bearers of our society. So any immature decision and a mistake will be a huge blow to oneself and to the society, they have far more responsibilities then their male counterpart, and hence they should realize that and work ahead.
A very serious issue and a dangerous trend emerging in our society. If we dont devise and develop any counter mechanisms urgently, so as to tackle this ever growing menace and disease effectively, then this might have a serious impact on our future generations and thousands year old glorious past, culture and tradition. All we need to do is to make sure that we take the opinions of all the intellectuals, conduct seminars and interactive sessions involving people from both the sexes and take decisions in a constructive and effective manner which may take some time to show its fruit but we can bring a change to make a prosperous, worthy and a fruitful society. Lets do it.
